Length: 4 Semesters

Purpose

The Associate of Arts and Sciences Transfer Degree, Pre-Teacher Preparation Elementary (PreK-6) Specialization is designed for students who are interested in teacher education, specifically in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6, to test the academic field in which they will be working. They will also have the courses required by numerous four-year institutions in Virginia for entrance into colleges of education. Students pursuing this specialization would attain requisite coursework for university programs and, in part, for teacher licensure in Virginia for elementary and middle school levels.

In order to be assured that courses transfer to meet lower-division requirements at the specific institution, the student plans to transfer to, and the major anticipated, students should consult an academic advisor before scheduling their courses. Students are also encouraged to investigate guaranteed admission agreements (GAA), available for many colleges and universities in Virginia, contact their selected college’s admissions office, and consult their selected college’s transfer guide if one is available. Counselors and academic advisors can assist with locating these resources.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the admission requirements established for the college, entry into this program requires proficiency in English and mathematics. Through the direct enrollment and self-enrollment survey or other measures students will be placed in the appropriate developmental or corequisite support courses in English and mathematics. Although developmental or support course credits do not apply toward the degree, these courses prepare students for collegiate-level work. Students required to take two or more developmental or corequisite support courses may need additional semesters to complete the degree.

Program Requirement

This curriculum should provide sufficient flexibility to meet lower-division requirements for majors in education or related fields at many colleges and universities and should allow students to succeed in transferring to obtain a baccalaureate degree. It is extremely important for students to work closely with their academic advisors to ensure a successful transfer.

1 Preferred courses are HIS 121   or HIS 122 .

2 Preferred courses are MTH 154  MTH 161 . Students should consult their academic advisor to select courses their transfer institution requires.

3 Preferred courses are BIO 101 , BIO 106 , GOL 105 , GOL 106 , or GOL 110 . 

4 Students should select from World Languages, a third Science, or a third Mathematics. Students may also choose HIS 111 , HIS 112 , HIS 121 , HIS 122 , HIS 141 , or HIS 281 . Students should consult their academic advisor to select courses required by their desired degree at their transfer institution.

5 Preferred courses are MTH 155  or MTH 245 . Students should consult their academic advisor and transfer institution to select appropriate math courses.

6 Students should select a different subject from their first laboratory science. Preferred courses are BIO 101 , CHM 101 , GOL 105 , GOL 106 . GOL 110 , PHY 101  PHY 146 (NAS 131) or PHY 142 (NAS 132).  Students should consult their academic advisor to select courses their transfer institution requires.

7 Preferred course is PSY 230 .

8 Preferred course is ENG 250 .

9 Preferred courses are ART 100 , ART 101 , ART 102 , MUS 121 , MUS 221 , MUS 222 , MUS 226 ,  CST 130 , or CST 151 . Students should consult their academic advisor to select courses required by their desired degree at their transfer institution.

10 Preferred course is EDU 204  Teaching in a Diverse Society.

11 Preferred courses are ECO 201 , ECO 202 ,  GEO 200 , GEO 210 , GEO 225, or PLS 135 . Students should consult their academic advisor to select courses required by their desired degree at their transfer institution.

12 Preferred course is EDU 250  Foundations of Exceptional Education.
