Purpose

This program teaches you the skills needed to administer medication in a variety of settings, including nursing homes and residences. Learn and develop skills in: proper procedure for preparing, administering, and maintaining medications; asepsis; basic pharmacology; assisting clients with self-administration of medication; and documentation.  This program is a great addition to your Nurse Aide or PCA. The combination of class time and clinical rotations provides you with plenty of practice and the confidence to succeed. Following successful completion of the course, you will be prepared to take the Virginia State Board of Nursing Medication Aide exam for licensure.

Admission Requirements

  • Proof of completion of a Nurse Aide course or a 40-hour DCA or PCA course
  • Proof of BLS and CPR for Healthcare Providers Certification (American Heart Association)
  • Pass background check and drug screening scheduled by Rappahannock Community College
  • Provide proof of required vaccinations/immunities through the document tracker. Applicants will be provided access to the tracker by Rappahannock Community College

Program Requirements

Clinical and behavioral requirements and supervised student experiences are required by the program and will be accomplished at selected agencies. Students are responsible for transportation to these facilities. Program preceptors will observe and evaluate student suitability for the profession across all domains of learning. If students do not exhibit the documented behaviors required of the healthcare professional, they may be asked to withdraw from the program. All students must comply with healthcare agency requirements for criminal background checks, drug testing, and CPR certification.
